1. It may sound surprising, but they are all connected with Great Britain and its famous people.

2. I think it's very important, especially now when our country fights with russia.

3. This group was really the voice of generation. The Beatles showed the power of music. Their songs united people all over the world.

4. Bell changed communication forever.

5. I would feel uncomfortable and unsafe. The day without a phone would be very dull and grey for me.

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960.
From 1962 the group consisted of John Lennon ( rhythm guitar, vocals ), Paul McCartney  (bass guitar, vocals ), George Harrison ( lead guitar, vocals ), Ringo Starr ( drums, vocals ). They are four boys who decided to play and sing together.  All four Beatles were born during the 1940s and grew up in Liverpool.

John Lennon

He was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England
His mother died when he was young.
He learned how to play the banjo and the piano
He was killed by a fan
on December 8, 1980

Paul McCartney

He was born in 1942
in Liverpool, England.
His mother died when he was young,too.
His dad encouraged him
to learn how to play musical instruments.
He learned how to play the Spanish guitar, the trumpet and the piano.

Ringo Starr

He was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England.
He became famous as
he was a great drummer.

George Harrison

He was born in 1943 in Liverpool, England.
He was the youngest child of four

In 1970 the Beatles broke up
and  started
their individual musical career.

Where are they now?

Only Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney are alive today.

On December 8, 1980, Lennon was shot dead as he was going into his home, by a man named Mark David Chapman who was mentally ill.

George Harrison
had lung cancer
and died in 2001.

Some may say that they are four young long-haired hooligans singing primitive rock'n'roll tunes. The others may put them in the same rank with the greatest composers as Mozart, Beethoven and Bach.
15 years of joint work, several concerts at the greatest TV-studios, concert - halls and stadiums of the world, 12 albums, some more than 200 songs... and the super popularity. The group changed pop-music forever. They were a symbol for the young generation of the sixties. They started a boom in the British pop music.

You can come to Liverpool and visit the Beatles Museum or you can come to London to see famous places connected with the Beatles.

ROBERT BURNS

Poem ‘My Heart's in the Highlands’ by Robert Burns (1759–1796)

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer –
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North –
The birth place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

Farewell to the mountains high cover’d with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart’s in the Highlands a-chasing the deer –
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Auld Lang Syne

SHOULD auld acquaintance be forgot,
  And never brought to min’?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
  And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear.
  For auld lang syne,
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
  For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
  And pu’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot
  Sin’ auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidled i’ the burn,
  From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
  Sin’ auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere,
  And gie’s a hand o’ thine;
And we’ll tak a right guid-willie waught,
  For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp,
  And surely I’ll be mine;
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet
  For auld lang syne.

Claud Monet

   Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840 and even as a young man was known for producing small portraits and charcoal. In 1858 Monet met the artist Eugene Boudin, who became his mentor and introduced Monet to painting outdoors or “ en plein air ” as it came to be known.

   In 1859, at the age of 19, Monet moved to Paris to become a professional artist. Most artist of his time tried to imitate nature realistically, but in his landscape painting Monet instead sought to portray nature as it appeared to him. In particular , he was interested in how light affects the ways that we perceive colour. In one of his most famous series of works Monet painted the cathedral in Rouen, France at several different times of day, showing how changes in natural light make the cathedral appear to change colour. These paintings relied on broad , thick brushstrokes.

   In 1883, Monet moved to a small town called Giverny where he built an elaborate garden. This garden, in particular its water lily ponds, became the chief subject of Monet’s later paintings. Monet’s paintings of water lilies were extremely influential to 20th century modern artists. In these paintings Monet used the landscape merely as a starting point , creating abstract fields of vibrant colour.

   The texture of these brushstrokes gave the canvases a tactile quality that contrasted sharply with the smooth canvases produced by more traditional artists. Though he struggled financially throughout his life, when Monet died in 1926, he was one of the most famous and influential painters in the world.

Text: Kon-Tiki Expedition

   The date was the 28th of April. It was the early morning. Callao harbour was
very busy. The Minister of Marine had ordered a tug to row us out of the harbour. A
crowd of people was waiting to watch.
When I arrived, only Herman was there. He was guarding the raft. I got out of
the car and jumped on board. Fruit baskets and boxes lay in a heap on the deck.
They had been thrown on board at the last moment. In the middle of the heap sat
Herman. He was holding a cage; and in the cage there was a green parrot. The bird
was a present from a friend in Peru.
“Take care of the parrot for a minute”, said Herman. “I want to go ashore and
have a drink. The tug won’t be here for a long time”.
Herman went for his drink, and a few minutes later the tug arrived. A large
motor-boat came to tow the raft away from the other boats. The motor-boat was full
of officers and sailors. The officers called out some orders; and the sailors then fixed
a strong rope to the raft.
“One moment!” I shouted. “It’s too early! We must wait for the other men”. I
pointed towards the city.
But nobody understood. The officers only smiled politely. I untied the rope
and threw it into the water. I waved my arms and made signs to the officers. This
excited the parrot. The bird opened its cage and escaped. It walked about on the
bamboo deck. I tried to catch the parrot. But it called out rude words in Spanish and
flew into the cabin. At last, I caught the bird and put it back into its cage.

Text
   Sleep is very important. Did you know that sleep is more important than
food? A person who does not sleep dies at a younger age than a person who does
not eat. Let’s say you go to sleep 12 hours later than you usually do. It will take
your body about three weeks to return to normal. We spend about one-third of our
lives in sleep. That’s about 121 days a year!
How much sleep do we need? We are all different. A baby needs 16 hours of
sleep every day. Children 6 to 12 years old need an average of 10 to 12 hours of
sleep. A teenager needs 9 to 10 hours of sleep. An adult needs an average of 7 to 8
hours a night. There are some people who need only 3 hours of sleep. Others need
10 hours of sleep. After the age of 50, the average sleep time goes down to 6.5 hours
a night. We need less sleep as we get older.
   Most people have some nights when they cannot sleep. About one in three
Americans has a problem with sleep. Many of these people cannot fall asleep or stay
asleep. The name of this problem is insomnia. The word insomnia means “no
sleep.” Some people say, “I didn’t sleep all night.” They may sleep lightly and wake
up several times. In the morning, they only remember the times they were awake, so
they think they were awake all night.
   This is not a new problem. According to the previous studies, many famous
people in history had insomnia. Some of these people had special ideas to make
them sleep. Benjamin Franklin, the famous statesman and inventor, had four beds.
He moved from one to the other to fall asleep. King Louis XIV of France had 413
beds and hoped to fall asleep in one of them. Mark Twain, the famous American
writer, had a different way. He lay on his side across the end of the bed!

Task 3. Decide if the following statements are True (T) or False (F).

21. Some people need only three hours of sleep a night.
22. Food is more important than sleep.
23. After age 50, the average sleep time is 6.5 hours a night.
24. One in four Americans has a problem with sleep.
25. We spend about a quarter of our lives in sleep.
26. Insomnia is the state when a person is full of energy.
27. The question of sleep has never been researched.
28. Benjamin Franklin could choose a bed.
29. French Kings and Queens didn’t have any problems with sleep.
30. Mark Twain was a famous inventor.
